I’ll gladly stop using “y’all” when someone suggests a better second person plural pronoun.

I’ve started using these because ffs, English, get your shit together.

I use these for this reason. I know just enough German to know that it has a “plural you” verb tense, “ihr.” Ich bin = I am; du bist = you are; er ist = he is; vir sind = we are; ihr seid = y’all are; sie sind = they are. (my German teacher made us memorize this in our first week, he was excellent; I am not sure of my spelling, though) So with people who know, I sometimes say “ihr” instead of “y’all,” but I use them pretty interchangeably.

I’m more specific about “all y’all”. I almost only ever use it in the context of a question. If I am asking a question to everybody individually, I tend to use “all y’all”. If I want a consensus, I use “y’all” instead. Variations on “collective/individual context” are most of the difference in use, for me.

Consider a few songs that have lyrics. What happens to them if you change the gender of the vocalist, but nothing else? Or also change all gender references in the song, if you feel heteronormative today.

The fact that this screws with the vast majority of rock and pop, and a significant chunk of electronica, I think says a lot against the concept that sexism is anything other than very alive and very well in our culture. I do believe it hurts us all, though, not limited to any subset of whatever genders you may choose to believe in. I’m not familiar enough with other genres, but I’d expect similar results in most cases, with the possible exception of opera.

This statistic assumes that there is a 0% rate of false rape accusations. While I don’t believe the rate is especially high, I do not believe it is significantly below that of other violent crimes for which a person may be falsely accused. While I believe the majority of reported rapes are real- as the 58% conviction rate of tried cases clearly represents, since our legal system is intended to be biased in favor of the defendant- I’m less convinced that all 42% of brought but unproven cases are a failure of the legal system. Surely some nontrivial percentage of that 42% is at least a case of mistaken identity.
